Waterbuck

The waterbuck is a large, robust antelope known for its shaggy coat, distinctive white markings and impressive horns. As its name suggests, it is closely associated with water, typically favouring riverbanks, floodplains, reed beds and grasslands near permanent water sources. Waterbuck are strong swimmers and often retreat into water or dense vegetation when threatened. In South Africa, they are most characteristic of wetter savanna and riverine environments rather than the driest areas of the Karoo.

A waterbuck hunt involves understanding the relationship between the animals and their preferred habitat. Their association with particular water sources and grazing areas can provide insight into where they may be encountered, although their excellent eyesight and hearing mean they remain alert to movement. Riverine vegetation, rocky ground and patches of woodland can all influence visibility and the approach through the landscape. Mature males are particularly impressive, with long, curved horns and a substantial build that distinguishes them from other antelope. As with all plains game, a responsible hunt requires careful identification, appropriate shot placement and respect for the animal and its surroundings.
