Steenbok

The steenbok is a small, solitary antelope that thrives in grassland, scrub and open woodland throughout much of southern Africa. Its reddish-brown coat, large ears and delicate build help it blend into dry vegetation, making it particularly well suited to the Karoo’s patches of grass, low shrubs and scattered bushes. Steenbok feed on a varied diet of leaves, shoots and other plant material, and their ability to obtain moisture from their food helps them survive in relatively dry environments.

Hunting steenbok requires a different approach from pursuing larger plains game. Their small size and natural camouflage mean they can be difficult to distinguish from the surrounding vegetation, even when they are relatively close. When threatened, a steenbok may crouch low in the grass and remain still until danger approaches, before suddenly rising and fleeing. This behaviour makes careful observation and an understanding of the terrain especially valuable. Their solitary nature also means that encounters can be brief and unpredictable.
