Duiker

The common duiker is a small, secretive antelope found across much of southern Africa. Its name comes from the Afrikaans word duik, meaning “to dive”, referring to its tendency to disappear rapidly into vegetation when disturbed. Duikers favour scrub, woodland, bush-covered slopes and areas where patches of dense grass provide suitable food and shelter. These habitats occur in parts of the Karoo, particularly where thicker vegetation interrupts the more open landscape.

Hunting duiker is a different experience from pursuing larger plains game species. Rather than relying on expansive views across open ground, the encounter often depends on careful observation and recognising subtle movement within the bush. Duikers can remain concealed until an approaching person is close, after which they may vanish into cover in seconds. Their small size, natural camouflage and cautious behaviour make identifying and evaluating an individual particularly demanding. Patience, attention to detail and an understanding of the local vegetation are essential.
